  Yeah, I am. I'm packing things tonight to take to my aunt's and uncle's house Sunday evening. A neighbor is going to drive me and some friends over there, it's a 2-3 hour drive though. So we'll have to leave early tomorrow to dodge/avoid the traffic. I'll be gone for a good while though. I'll let you know when I return.

  I can't remember where I first saw it, but it helps with calculation by eliminating the carrying operation.

If you do 23 + 19 as a column, 3+9=12, 2+1=3, but the 1 from the 12 is carried to give 42 in the end result. With this method, you don't need to carry, and furthermore if you only need a rough estimate you can do that more quickly.

This is the essence of mental or even written arithmetic, learning different tricks that you can use to make calculations easier or harder.

Here's an example - if you are to calculate 144/4 in your head, how would you do it? So long as you get the correct answer, there may not be one 'correct' way, but you may be able to do it quicker with a different way.

  I got 966 too, I used mental math on a piece of paper. That was an interesting method CG of how you solved that problem. How did you come up with the idea? I'd like to learn from you in doing math in a much simpler way.

  I like to add numbers in my head as a running count, left to right:

600+100=700
700+30+60+80+70=940
940+5+4+3+9+5=966

Answer is 966.

  It's Mania Monday again. Traffic always seems to be packed on the highway on this day, the other days of the week it's less congested on the freeways and roads. That tells you that Monday is the busiest day of the week.
