  Try not to go outside of the ideal size level unless it is necessary for your puzzle. There is no need to add the white/color blocks in closed areas, there is no puzzle there it is just extra moves everyone has to do and can't possibly mess up. Having long halls that never come into play is a poor choice as it just needlessly increases the level size.
